Today I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts on Breath.

When I coach or am teaching, even though I am typically on the phone and can’t see students physically, I can see them energetically. When I say, ‘breathe,’ the response is usually a laugh, followed by ‘I didn’t notice I was holding my breath.’

It’s not that we are actually holding our breath. Although when we are reminded to breathe, it somehow feels like we weren’t breathing.

When we are reminded to breathe it connects us completely. It’s like waking up.

When we are unconscious to our breath, I see the disconnect between mind and body. There is an emptiness. That’s why I tell people to ‘breathe.’

There are many powerful quotes about the importance of connection to our breath. This one from Svatmarama is really great:

When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath. ~Svatmarama, Hatha Yoga Pradipika

In Yoga, it’s (almost) all about your breath, connecting your body and mind through the breath.

It is in Yoga that I first learned the importance of connecting to our breath, the peace it offers, the calm it creates, the steadiness it brings.

And the best things about focusing on our breath …it’s simple, it’s always with you and it doesn’t cost you anything 😀

Start out with a simple, slow deep breathing practice and when I say ‘deep,’ only go as deep as is comfortable to start. Sometimes when we start with deep breathing, we try to go really deep and the body reacts to that. The key is to simply slow and steady your breath through a conscious act (meaning you are focused on it.)  Set a timer and spend just 5 minutes to start with slow, steady conscious breaths.

Here’s a great thing about focusing on your breath: the more you focus on your breath and train yourself to experience slow and steady breathing, you’ll be able to tap into it whenever you need.

I’m sure you can find 5 minutes a day to play with this. In fact, I know you can.
